Why Is Good Friday Good?

Have you ever wondered how we come up with some of the names that we do for certain dates?

Some of them make sense, such as Cyber Monday, I get it, and there are special shopping deals you can only get on your computer the Monday after Thanksgiving.

Black Friday

This is the day that so many shoppers live for, you can get these special deals only on this day.

I used to think they named it Black Friday because the retailers were having to discount their profits so heavily, so they were sad.

That is not what it means, in fact it is the day that helps them make the profits they need for the year.

Why Is Good Friday Good?

But why Good Friday?

Why would you call a day so full of heartache and sorrow Good?

I am sure that it did not seem like a Good Day for the followers of Jesus.

So how did we get to the point of calling it Good?

It’s Not A Good Friday Because

And while He was still speaking, behold, a multitude; and he who was called Judas, one of the twelve, went before them and drew near to Jesus to kiss Him. 48 But Jesus said to him, “Judas, are you betraying the Son of Man with a kiss?” Luke 22: 47-48

Jesus is betrayed by one of His own disciples, and even worse with a kiss.

A kiss is not meant to bring heartache and destruction, it is supposed to signify Love.

Judas how could you use a kiss?

It’s Not A Good Friday Because

Now as Peter was below in the courtyard, one of the servant girls of the high priest came. 67 And when she saw Peter warming himself, she looked at him and said, “You also were with Jesus of Nazareth.”

68 But he denied it, saying, “I neither know nor understand what you are saying.” And he went out on the porch, and a rooster crowed.

69 And the servant girl saw him again, and began to say to those who stood by, “This is one of them.” 70 But he denied it again.

It’s Not A Good Friday Because

And a little later those who stood by said to Peter again, “Surely you are one of them; for you are a Galilean, and your speech shows it.”

71 Then he began to curse and swear, “I do not know this Man of whom you speak!”

72 A second time the rooster crowed. Then Peter called to mind the word that Jesus had said to him, “Before the rooster crows twice, you will deny Me three times.” And when he thought about it, he wept. Mark 14: 66-72

While Peter had fled with the rest when they took Jesus, he has followed at a distance. The one who said he would die first before he would deny Jesus has succumbed to the pressure of three questions.

It’s Not A Good Friday Because

Then the soldiers of the governor took Jesus into the Praetorium and gathered the whole garrison around Him. 28 And they stripped Him and put a scarlet robe on Him. 29 When they had twisted a crown of thorns, they put it on His head, and a reed in His right hand. And they bowed the knee before Him and mocked Him, saying, “Hail, King of the Jews!” 30 Then they spat on Him, and took the reed and struck Him on the head. 31 And when they had mocked Him, they took the robe off Him, put His own clothes on Him, and led Him away to be crucified.

Matthew 27: 27-30

So Why Is Good Friday Good?

It is because the Passover Lamb has been provided.

The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him, and said, “Behold! The Lamb of God who takes away the sin of the world! John 1:29

So Why Is Good Friday Good?

From the time of the fall in the Garden of Eden the fellowship and closeness man once had with GOD was gone, sin separated us from GOD.

But now the one that could truly take away our sins has come, and John proclaims this Good News.

For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, 1 Corinthians 15:3

So Why Is Good Friday Good?

We Can Have Fellowship with GOD

For when we were still without strength, in due time Christ died for the ungodly. 7 For scarcely for a righteous man will one die; yet perhaps for a good man someone would even dare to die. 8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were still sinners, Christ died for us. 9 Much more then, having now been justified by His blood, we shall be saved from wrath through Him. 10 For if when we were enemies we were reconciled to God through the death of His Son, much more, having been reconciled, we shall be saved by His life. 11 And not only that, but we also rejoice in God through our Lord Jesus Christ, through whom we have now received the reconciliation. Romans 5:6-10

So Why Is Good Friday Good?

looking unto Jesus, the author and finisher of our faith, who for the joy that was set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God. Hebrews 12:2

It was a Good Friday because it was finished.

Jesus accomplished all that needed to be done, He sat Down, so that whosever would repent of their sins and turn to Christ in faith can be forgiven.

So Why Is Good Friday Good?

who, when He was reviled, did not revile in return; when He suffered, He did not threaten, but committed Himself to Him who judges righteously; 24 who Himself bore our sins in His own body on the tree, that we, having died to sins, might live for righteousness—by whose stripes you were healed. 25 For you were like sheep going astray, but have now returned to the Shepherd and Overseer of your souls. 1 Peter 2:24

We Can Come Home

Good Friday Is Good

Yes Good Friday is Good.

Not because of the terrible things that happened that day.

That day was so bad because Sin is so terrible and

Jesus took our sins upon Himself and nailed them to the cross.

It is Good because He has made a way for us to be forgiven, to have fellowship with GOD, and make Heaven out Home.

Happy Easter
